Microsoft gives 425,000 Power BI customers free access to Fabric Apps and databases

The Register · 2 hours ago

Microsoft is extending its Fabric data analytics platform to the massive user base of Power BI, providing 425,000 customers with complimentary access to Fabric Apps and Fabric Database capabilities (up to 1GB per app) at no additional cost. This represents an order of magnitude expansion of Fabric's addressable market, as the software giant seeks to convert its established Power BI user base—which includes over 35 million monthly business users—into application developers, according to executive Arun Ulag.

The expansion is powered by Rayfin, an open-source SDK that enables Power BI users to build data analytics applications with AI coding agents such as GitHub Copilot and Claude Code. Each application receives 1GB of Fabric SQL database storage, built-in authentication, and security features, with the capability to scale and hand off to professional development teams as requirements grow. Microsoft is also previewing bidirectional integration with Salesforce Data Cloud 360, allowing organisations to leverage CRM data across the Fabric environment for analytics and AI applications without duplicating data.

  • Power BI's 425,000 customers gain free access to Fabric app-building and database tools
  • Rayfin SDK enables users to build data apps with AI coding agents, launching in preview soon
  • Microsoft also integrating Salesforce Data Cloud for cross-platform data analytics
