Report: Nvidia to acquire AI model repository Hugging Face for $13 billion

Ars Technica ·

Nvidia is reportedly in talks to acquire Hugging Face for about $12.9 billion, a move that would give the chipmaker considerable influence over a central platform for open-weight AI models. The deal is not final, but it matters because Hugging Face acts much like a GitHub-style repository for AI: researchers and developers find, adapt and share models there, making it strategically important infrastructure for the wider AI industry.

Hugging Face, founded in 2016, is reportedly unprofitable but has become the de facto hub for hosting and working with open models; Salesforce was also said to have expressed interest. Nvidia, Google and Microsoft have previously invested in the company, while Nvidia’s potential ownership could strengthen its cloud ambitions and encourage more of the open-model ecosystem to rely on its hardware. The acquisition could also bolster Nvidia’s position in robotics and other physical AI, where Hugging Face has been expanding beyond language models.

  • Nvidia reportedly seeks Hugging Face for $12.9 billion.
  • The deal would deepen Nvidia’s AI ecosystem influence.
  • Talks continue and the acquisition is not finalised.

New here? Start with this

Hugging Face is a platform where researchers and companies publish, find and adapt AI models, including models whose underlying weights are available for others to use. Founded in 2016, it has become a common meeting place for people building AI tools, much as GitHub is for software code.

Nvidia makes the specialised chips widely used to train and run AI systems, and also offers cloud computing services. The companies’ interests overlap as developers choose which models to use and what hardware and services to run them on.

A change in ownership could therefore affect an important part of the open-model ecosystem, as well as Nvidia’s place in it. Hugging Face has also expanded into areas such as robotics, where AI is used to help machines interact with the physical world.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Nvidia could argue that acquiring Hugging Face would give it the resources to improve a widely used platform and connect its expertise in chips, cloud computing and robotics with a thriving open-model community. A well-funded owner could support better tools and infrastructure, while Nvidia’s investment might help developers build and deploy models more easily.

The case against

Developers and competitors could reasonably worry that Nvidia’s ownership would give a powerful chipmaker influence over a central, broadly used meeting place for open AI. Even without restricting access, Nvidia might shape platform priorities or steer users towards its own hardware and cloud services, weakening trust in Hugging Face’s neutrality and making the wider ecosystem more dependent on one company.
