Reservoir raises $8M to make water heaters that people — and the grid — will actually want

TechCrunch · 2 hours ago

Reservoir Climate has raised $8 million in seed funding to develop smarter, heat-pump water heaters designed to lower household energy use while helping electricity grids manage demand. The Boston-based company argues that water heaters are an overlooked but significant source of household costs and water damage, and aims to make its product attractive through practical features rather than environmental claims alone.

The round was led by Asymmetric Capital Partners, with Founder Collective and MCJ participating, and will support further installations around Boston. Reservoir has installed about 100 units and targets around 1,000 by the end of next year; its system learns household hot-water patterns, heats water when power is cheaper and demand is lower, and uses a heat pump said to be nearly four times as efficient as conventional electric models. Its higher-specification Max model includes leak detection, instant hot-water recirculation, freeze protection and a 50-gallon tank that can supply up to 150 gallons in “party mode”.
