Revealed: The popular children’s yoghurts that contain dangerous amounts of sugar – with Nestle’s Smarties Vanilla Split Pot at the top of the list

Action on Salt & Sugar has analysed 104 popular yoghurts sold in UK supermarkets and found that most contain dangerous levels of sugar. Of the yoghurts examined, only two were low in total sugars, raising concerns for parents who purchase these products assuming they are nutritious options for their children. The research highlights a discrepancy between child-targeted marketing and actual nutritional content, with products featuring cartoon characters and bright packaging often containing excessive amounts of free sugars.

Nestlé's Smarties Vanilla Split Pot was identified as the worst offender, containing 14.1g of sugar per 100g (15.1g per serving), followed by Lidl's Milbona Fruit Duo at 11.3g per 100g and Nestlé's Munch Bunch at 10.7g per 100g. The healthiest options analysed were The Collective Great Dairy Natural with Vitamin D and Yoplait Petits Filous No Added Sugar, both containing just 4.7g per 100g. Research suggests that only approximately 3.8g per 100g of sugars occur naturally from milk, meaning the majority comes from harmful free sugars including added sugar, fruit purees, and fruit juices. According to NHS guidance, a single serving of the worst offenders can exceed or nearly meet children's entire daily sugar allowance, with recommended limits ranging from 10g for one-year-olds to 24g for children aged 7-10.
