Blade Runner began as a 1982 science-fiction film directed by Ridley Scott, set in a future Los Angeles where human-like artificial beings, called replicants, are hunted by special police officers known as blade runners. The story explores questions about identity and what makes someone human. Harrison Ford played the central blade runner, Rick Deckard.
Blade Runner 2049, released in 2017 and directed by Denis Villeneuve, followed a new blade runner, played by Ryan Gosling, decades after the first film. Blade Runner 2099 is planned as an eight-part continuation of both films, with Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer among its lead actors. Ridley Scott is producing the series, which is due to stream on Prime Video.
