RIP Cybertruck. You Were Unloved, Unwanted, and Utterly Absurd
Tesla appears to be winding down Cybertruck production, although the company has not confirmed that it will stop making the pickup altogether. The polarising vehicle attracted strong reactions from fans and critics, but struggled to turn early excitement into sustained sales.
Elon Musk once claimed more than a million reservations, yet fewer than 50,000 Cybertrucks had been sold by March last year. Kelley Blue Book data cited by EVWire put US sales at 11,586 in the first three quarters of this year, down 28 per cent year on year. The truck also faced repeated recalls over issues including its accelerator pedal, body trim, wheels and brake rotors.
In short
- Tesla has not confirmed the Cybertruck is being discontinued.
- US sales fell 28 per cent in the first three quarters of this year.
- The pickup faced repeated recalls and reliability problems.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
The Cybertruck’s reported production slowdown suggests that its unconventional design and high-profile launch did not translate into sustained demand, while repeated recalls may have weakened confidence. With sales falling year on year, ending or reducing production could be a sensible response to the market and free resources for vehicles with stronger prospects.
The case against
The company has not confirmed that it will stop making the Cybertruck, and a sharp or polarising launch does not by itself show that the vehicle has no lasting market. Early reservation numbers and the strong reactions it drew suggest a distinctive product with a committed audience; Tesla could address quality problems and adjust production or pricing rather than abandon it.
