Nick Reiner, son of filmmaker Rob Reiner, is seeking access to a $1.6 million trust fund whilst awaiting trial for the alleged murder of his parents. His legal team argues he should be permitted to use these funds for his defence, as a substantial portion originates from his late grandfather Carl Reiner rather than from his parents, and should therefore not be subject to California's Slayer Statute, which prevents those convicted of murder from financially benefiting from their victim's death.

The trustee has withheld the funds by citing the Slayer Statute as grounds for prevention. However, Nick's lawyers contend the statute does not apply to inheritance passed down by his grandfather, who died in 2020, before the alleged murders. Court documents reveal that at least £250,000 was transferred from Carl Reiner's estate into the trust account in December 2024. Nick, who has been detained at Twin Towers Correctional Facility for nearly a year and has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder, currently cannot even access $5 to purchase basic commissary items, according to his legal filings. His siblings Jake and Romy have reportedly refused to assist him.
