ROBERT HARDMAN: On the 110th anniversary of the Somme, the faces of the heroes who died – including the brave son of Daily Mail publisher – will light up Big Ben
Photographs of five people killed during the Battle of the Somme will be projected on to the Palace of Westminster for the battle’s 110th anniversary. The display, organised by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the Speaker of the House of Commons, honours those who died and brings personal stories into a national act of remembrance.
The people featured include Welsh and Scottish rugby internationals Edward Thomas and Eric Milroy, nurse Barbara St John, and Captain James Davidson of the Ulster Division. England is represented by Lieutenant Vere Harmsworth, the 21-year-old son of the first Viscount Rothermere, who died leading his men at the Battle of Ancre in November 1916. More than 400,000 British casualties were recorded during the four-month Somme campaign, including 19,240 killed on its first day.
