Ronaldinho, 46, on mission of love and happiness – and maybe goals – at Serie C’s Ravenna

The Guardian · 2 hours ago

Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho, now 46, was officially unveiled as a signing for Italian fourth-tier club Ravenna on Thursday, turning what many had dismissed as a hoax or publicity stunt into reality. The former Barcelona and Milan star, who last played professionally for Fluminense in 2015, arrived by private jet and underwent a medical, becoming a club partner while also holding out hope of appearing on the pitch and scoring one final goal in Ravenna's colours.

At a press conference held at the historic Monaldina residence, Ronaldinho said friendship and passion had drawn him to the Romagna club, and that his aims were "to help, to excite the other players, and to have a spectacular season" while bringing "happiness and love" to the city. Club vice-president Ariedo Braida hailed the move as bringing "the magic of football" to Ravenna, though whether Ronaldinho actually plays will be left to the president and coach; he will not feature in Ravenna's Serie C season opener on Monday.
