RuneScape 4 Officially Revealed by Jagex
Jagex has revealed RuneScape 4, a new MMO set in the RuneScape universe, at its annual RuneFest event in Birmingham. The project matters because it grew beyond an expansion to survival game RuneScape: Dragonwilds after players asked for more social features, leading the studio to develop it as a separate game.
Executive producer Jesse America said RuneScape 4 is being made with Unreal Engine and is intended to feature persistent servers, large numbers of players and player-to-player trading. Its trailer shows dragons that players can fight and ride, and Jagex says the whole studio will work on the game. Development is at an early stage, with no release date, platforms or detailed gameplay information announced; the future of RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and Dragonwilds has not been confirmed.

RuneScape is a long-running online role-playing game series made by British studio Jagex. Players create characters, explore a shared fantasy world and take part in quests and other activities alongside people playing online.
Jagex has also been developing RuneScape: Dragonwilds, a survival game set in the same universe. The new project began as an expansion to Dragonwilds, but player interest in social features led the studio to develop it as a separate MMO.
The project is at an early stage, so its eventual place alongside the existing RuneScape games and Dragonwilds is not yet clear. Its scale and focus on shared play could affect how Jagex develops the wider series.
