Russian attacks kill 9, injure 19 across Ukraine over past day, as casualty toll from Russian strikes in Kherson Oblast rises following end of ceasefire
Russian attacks killed nine people and injured 19 across Ukraine in the 24 hours before 5 November, according to local authorities. The toll in Kherson Oblast has risen since a ceasefire for an evacuation from Russian-occupied Oleshky ended overnight on 2 November; the latest attack there killed a civilian for the first time since the ceasefire ended.
Overnight, Russia launched two guided missiles and 128 long-range drones, including 65 jet-powered drones. Ukrainian air defences intercepted 105 drones by about 8am, while impacts were recorded at 18 locations and debris at nine. Donetsk reported four deaths and five injuries, Zaporizhzhia three deaths and one injury, and Sumy one death and four injuries; attacks also injured people in Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv and Kherson.
In short

- A civilian was killed in Kherson after the evacuation ceasefire ended.
- Air defences intercepted 105 of 128 drones launched overnight.
Explained simply
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, and fighting has continued across several regions. Russian forces use missiles and drones to strike locations across the country, while Ukrainian air defences try to intercept them.
Ukraine is divided into regions, including Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy and Kherson in the east and south, where much of the fighting has taken place. Kherson Oblast includes territory on both sides of the Dnipro River, including areas under Russian occupation and areas controlled by Ukraine.
Oleshky is a town in Russian-occupied Kherson Oblast. A ceasefire was arranged to allow people to leave the town; its end matters because residents in the area remain exposed to attacks and movement across the front line is difficult.
