Hackers claim role in attacks on European supermarket freezer systems
Two Russian hacktivist groups say they worked together to hack freezer systems used by European supermarkets, but researchers are sceptical and have not confirmed who was responsible. The incidents matter because they disrupted temperature controls in commercial freezers and may reflect a planned campaign against exposed industrial equipment.
Three cyber-security firms used digital decoys, or “honeypots”, to observe activity around the attacks. Researchers say the second wave targeted devices across several European countries at the same time, apparently overnight; possible perpetrators include Russian or Iranian actors, state-backed hackers, or pranksters. Similar incidents have been reported in Israel in 2022 and at six or more US military bases in late August, while investigations continue.
In short
- Russian groups claimed responsibility, but their claims are unverified.
- Decoy systems captured scanning activity before the second wave.
- Researchers are considering several possible perpetrators.
