Russia launched a ballistic and cruise missile attack on Kyiv on Tuesday, hours after US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited the Ukrainian capital as part of efforts to revive stalled peace talks. The strikes damaged residential buildings in two districts, trapped people inside one apartment block and sparked fires, including at an educational facility, underlining how far apart Moscow and Kyiv remain despite renewed diplomatic engagement from Washington.

The attack came just after a three-day ceasefire, agreed before Witkoff and Kushner's visit, expired on Tuesday. The pair had met Ukrainian officials in Kyiv on Sunday, a day after talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, with Witkoff saying "substantive progress" had been made towards scheduling further trilateral talks. Separately, Russia's Saratov region reported a Ukrainian drone strike on civilian infrastructure, while Ukrainian officials said Russian attacks had killed and wounded dozens across the country over the previous day, and Ukrainian drones had hit three Russian oil refineries on Monday.
