Russian strikes cut electricity to 600,000 Ukrainians, Zelensky says

BBC World ·

Russian missile and drone strikes left at least 600,000 people in Ukraine without electricity, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. The attacks hit energy infrastructure in Kyiv and the surrounding region, as well as Kharkiv, raising questions about a claimed energy ceasefire.

Ukraine’s emergency service reported three people killed and 21 injured in Kyiv. Ukraine said Russia launched 39 missiles and 128 drones overnight; it reported shooting down four missiles and 115 drones. Russia said it targeted facilities supporting Ukraine’s military and claimed to have downed 902 Ukrainian drones. Zelensky has said Ukraine would stop attacks on Russian energy sites if Moscow did the same, while Russia’s foreign minister rejected a ceasefire respite.

Ukraine and Russia have been at war since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, leads the country’s government and armed forces, while Moscow’s government and military direct Russia’s campaign.

Electricity networks are part of the infrastructure both sides say they target during the war. Damage can leave homes and public services without power, and claims about attacks and interceptions come from the countries involved and may differ.

Zelensky has proposed that both countries stop striking energy sites, but Russia’s foreign minister has rejected a pause. Whether such a halt can be agreed matters to people who depend on power and to the wider course of the war.
