Neon has set a 25 November theatrical release date for "All of a Sudden," the latest film from Japanese writer-director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, ahead of an awards-season campaign. The film premiered in competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival, where stars Virginie Efira and Okamoto Tao shared the best actress prize, and its release positions Neon to build on the studio's recent Oscar successes with best-picture nominees "Sentimental Value" and "The Secret Agent."

The French-Japanese drama follows Efira's Marie-Lou, who runs a care home and clashes with staff over a new resident-focused philosophy of care, before forming a close bond with Okamoto's Mari, a Japanese theatre director facing a cancer diagnosis. Hamaguchi, whose "Drive My Car" won the best international feature Oscar and became the first Japanese film nominated for best picture, co-wrote the script with Léa Le Dimna, loosely drawing on a real collection of letters between a terminally ill philosopher and a medical anthropologist. The film joins a packed 2026 Neon slate that also includes titles from Luca Guadagnino, Cristian Mungiu and James Gray.
