McInnes booed as Rangers draw with Hearts and Celtic share points

The Guardian ·

Rangers and Celtic both drew 2-2, leaving the Scottish Premiership title race and the contest for second place unchanged. Rangers manager Derek McInnes was booed on his first return to Hearts, the club he left for Ibrox in June, while a late equaliser denied Hearts a win.

At Tynecastle, Kevin Kelsy scored for Rangers before Cláudio Braga and Calvin Miller put Hearts ahead; Olwethu Makhanya headed in the 89th-minute equaliser. Second-placed Rangers remain four points behind Celtic and four ahead of Hearts. Celtic came from behind against Dundee United, with Camilo Durán and Liam Scales scoring; elsewhere, Falkirk beat Aberdeen 1-0, Dundee beat Kilmarnock 3-1, Hibernian drew 1-1 with St Mirren, and Motherwell and St Johnstone drew 2-2.

In short

  • Rangers and Hearts shared a 2-2 draw after a late Rangers equaliser.
  • Celtic also drew 2-2, against Dundee United.
  • Rangers remain four points behind Celtic and four ahead of Hearts.

Explained simply

Scottish Premiership clubs play each other home and away, with points awarded for wins and draws. Those points determine the league table and, at the end of the season, the champion; teams near the top also compete for places in European competitions.

Rangers and Celtic are Glasgow’s two biggest clubs and have long been the main contenders for the title. Hearts, based in Edinburgh, are among the clubs seeking to challenge them. Derek McInnes managed Hearts before leaving for Rangers, making his return to Tynecastle a meeting with his former club.

The results matter because Rangers, Celtic and Hearts are also competing for positions near the top of the table. A draw earns each side one point, so results across the league can affect both the title contest and the race for European places.
