‘Searching for SmarterChild’ Filmmakers Investigate Why We Insult Chatbots

Variety ·

The documentary *Searching for SmarterChild* explores why people insult chatbots and what those exchanges reveal about human relationships with artificial intelligence. Co-directed by Zan Gillies and Lindsey Sitz, the project won the New Visions Award for the most promising U.S. project at the Ji.hlava Documentary Film Festival.

SmarterChild was an early chatbot used by about 3 million people through text messages on services including AOL and Yahoo. Its engineers were surprised by users’ abusive messages and added warnings, snarky replies and temporary shutdowns until users apologised. The filmmakers have raised about $18,000, roughly a fifth of their expected budget, and plan further interviews and a scene featuring a rebuilt SmarterChild.
