Seconds from death: Moment Ukrainian sprints from path of incoming Russian drone before it lands yards away in huge fireball explosion

Daily Mail ·

A man narrowly escaped a Russian Shahed drone strike in Kyiv's Bucha district on Thursday afternoon, sprinting to safety mere seconds before the unmanned aircraft crashed into a children's playground, obliterating the site in a massive explosion. The dramatic escape, captured on video, highlights the intensifying Russian aerial assault on Ukraine, with fast jet-powered drones being deployed in near-constant daytime raids that challenge the country's air defences. Fortunately, no casualties were reported as other people at the location were sheltering indoors at the time of the attack.

The drone struck the playground in the village of Sviatopetrivske within Bucha district, with rescue workers quickly responding to extinguish fires at a nearby nursery school. The incident comes as the conflict enters its fourth year, with both Russia and Ukraine escalating attacks on infrastructure; separately, UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the site of a Russian missile strike in Pryluky, Chernihiv, where 22 civilians were killed. Ukraine has launched retaliatory strikes, disabling Yandex data centres in Russia—including the company's largest facility in Kaluga region—in the second such attack in as many days, marking an expansion of both nations' targeting strategies beyond energy facilities to include technology infrastructure.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which began in 2022, continues with no immediate end in sight. Russian forces conduct regular drone and missile strikes across Ukrainian territory, targeting both military installations and civilian areas. Ukrainian cities face persistent aerial bombardment, particularly from unmanned aircraft like Shahed drones, which are designed to evade some air defences.

Both sides have significantly expanded their military operations as the conflict has intensified. Russia maintains intense aerial assault campaigns against populated areas, whilst Ukraine has responded with strikes on Russian infrastructure including technology facilities. This broadening of targets means civilians in affected regions face escalating risks.

Ordinary people across Ukraine, including in areas near Kyiv that have seen occupation and fighting, continue living in their communities. Drone and missile strikes can occur with little warning, putting civilians in danger in everyday locations. This ongoing threat of attack affects millions of Ukrainians and shapes daily life.
