Five senior military officials in Kazakhstan have been detained following a tragic incident during military exercises in which 14 service members lost their lives after being swept into the Caspian Sea. The deaths occurred when personnel were disembarking from a boat on Thursday; a total of 17 were swept overboard during the operation. The officials are suspected of criminal negligence, and an interior ministry investigation has been launched to examine the decision-making processes that led to the tragedy.

The incident took place approximately 43 kilometres from the city of Aktau in south-western Kazakhstan during the large-scale Caspian Defense 2026 exercise, which involved more than 500 military personnel, warships and coastal units. The detained officials include the chief of staff and first deputy commander of Kazakhstan's Naval Forces, two military unit commanders, and the commanders of a marine company and boat. Investigators are examining multiple factors including the decisions made during the organisation and execution of the training mission, whether safety requirements were properly observed, the vessel's technical specifications, and whether meteorological conditions were adequately considered, though officials initially attributed the incident to sharp deterioration in weather and increasing winds.
