Wi-Fi and Ethernet suit different needs in a home network

Engadget ·

A home network benefits from having both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, because they serve different needs. Wi-Fi is convenient for mobile devices and smart-home equipment, while Ethernet can provide faster, more reliable connections for devices that need consistent performance.

Wireless speeds can fall short of an internet plan because signals weaken through walls, compete for bandwidth and face interference. Wi-Fi bands and generations also affect range and speed: 2.4GHz reaches farther, while 5GHz and 6GHz can be faster but cover less area; mesh systems can help extend coverage.

  • Use Wi-Fi for convenience and mobile devices.
  • Ethernet suits tasks needing speed and reliability.
  • Router bands, standards and placement affect Wi-Fi performance.
