Skoda Auto to reassess ice hockey championship role if Russia takes part
Skoda Auto says it will reassess its role as an Ice Hockey World Championship sponsor if Russia’s national team takes part. The Czech carmaker opposes Russia’s return while its invasion of Ukraine continues, saying participation would conflict with the values it has upheld.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport recently overturned the international hockey federation’s exclusion of Russian teams, prompting opposition from several European federations. The Czech, Norwegian, Danish and Swedish federations have said they would refuse to play Russia at next year’s men’s championship in Germany. Skoda has sponsored the tournament since 1993; Swedish firm AJ Products has withdrawn its sponsorship of next year’s event, while Nokian Tyres says it will end its sponsorship of the 2027 championship if Russia competes.
In short
- Skoda may reconsider its championship sponsorship if Russia competes.
- The carmaker says Russia’s return conflicts with its values.
- Other sponsors and European federations have also objected.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Allowing Russia’s team to compete could uphold the principle that sport should remain open to athletes unless a clear, consistently applied rule excludes them. A return might also preserve the championship’s sporting integrity and give the international federation room to follow the court ruling, while separating athletes from their government’s actions.
The case against
Keeping Russia out while its invasion of Ukraine continues can be defended as refusing to treat international sport as detached from the realities of aggression. Sponsors and national federations may reasonably judge that participation would conflict with their values, risk normalising Russia’s conduct, and undermine confidence among Ukrainian players and supporters.
Explained simply
The Ice Hockey World Championship is the sport’s main international tournament for national teams, organised by the International Ice Hockey Federation. Skoda Auto, a Czech carmaker, has sponsored it since 1993, making the company a long-standing commercial partner.
Russia’s national team has been excluded from international hockey competitions since the invasion of Ukraine began. The Court of Arbitration for Sport, which hears disputes in sport, overturned the hockey federation’s exclusion; several European federations have opposed Russia’s return. The issue matters because any decision on participation could affect both the tournament and its relationships with sponsors.
