Sony brings AI upscaling to standard PS5 with new QSSR technology

Sony has launched Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI graphics upscaling technology for the standard PS5, developed through its Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD. This brings AI-enhanced image quality improvements to the base console, addressing poor upscaling that has affected many PS5 titles. The technology is now available to all PlayStation developers, with Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei receiving patches today to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option.

QSSR produces upscaled 1440p output on the standard PS5 rather than the 4K achieved by PSSR on the PS5 Pro, as the base console lacks dedicated machine learning hardware. Sony's principal graphics R&D engineer confirmed the technology requires only minimal tuning to function as a "drop-in replacement" for existing PSSR implementations, making widespread developer adoption likely. Digital Foundry noted that the potential impact could be substantial, as low resolution and poor upscaling have affected numerous titles this generation.

When video games are rendered, they are often displayed at a lower resolution than modern screens support, then enlarged to fill the screen—a process called upscaling. When done poorly, this enlargement can make games look blurry or muddy, which has been a problem affecting many PlayStation 5 titles. Sony's new QSSR technology uses artificial intelligence to make this enlargement process smarter, producing clearer, sharper images instead.

QSSR was developed by Sony working with chipmaker AMD through a collaboration known as Project Amethyst. The standard PS5 lacks the specialised hardware that the more expensive PS5 Pro has, so QSSR produces images at 1440p resolution rather than 4K. Sony has designed the technology to be simple for game developers to add, requiring only minimal changes to the upscaling code already used in their games.

This matters because image quality issues from poor upscaling have affected numerous PS5 games since the console's launch. Making this AI upscaling technology available on the base PS5 could improve how millions of standard console owners experience these games without requiring new hardware or console upgrades.
