"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has crossed $1 billion internationally in just 12 days, the second-fastest film ever to hit that mark overseas after "Avengers: Endgame". The Sony release, Tom Holland's fourth solo outing as the web-slinger, now stands at $1.67 billion worldwide, making it the biggest film of the year and the 12th-highest grosser of all time, underlining the pent-up demand for the character following a five-year gap since "No Way Home".

In its second weekend alone the film took $381 million globally ($236 million overseas, $145 million domestically), with China its top international market at $186.7 million to date, ahead of the UK ($87.4 million) and Mexico ($65.8 million). With little competition and strong repeat viewing, it is now tracking towards $2 billion, a milestone only seven films have ever reached. Elsewhere, Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" became his highest-grossing film ever at $1.104 billion globally, while Paramount's "PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie" opened to $23 million overseas.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the fourth solo Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland, released by Sony Pictures and produced with Marvel Studios. It arrives five years after the last instalment, "No Way Home", and follows the same version of Peter Parker as he continues in the role after the events of that film.

The film's box office performance is being tracked closely because it reflects how strongly audiences worldwide are still turning out for big franchise releases at the cinema, at a time when the film industry pays close attention to whether blockbusters can still draw huge global crowds. Figures such as total earnings, how quickly a film passes certain money thresholds, and comparisons with past hits like "Avengers: Endgame" are standard industry yardsticks used to judge a film's success and its place in cinema history.

Other current releases mentioned alongside it, such as Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" and Paramount's "PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie", offer useful context on how the wider box office is performing this year, helping to show whether Spider-Man's success is part of a broader trend or a standout case.
