Director Destin Daniel Cretton, who stepped in after Jon Watts departed the franchise, has discussed how "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" will explore a darker chapter for Peter Parker, partly driven by a team-up with Jon Bernthal's brutal vigilante Frank Castle/Punisher. Speaking to Collider ahead of the film's release, Cretton explained how he balanced this bleaker tone with the quippy, fun energy fans expect from the Spider-Man films, a tension that shapes the movie's PG-13 storyline.

The film picks up with Tom Holland's Peter Parker isolated after his sacrifice at the end of "Spider-Man: No Way Home", having lost the support of Stark Industries and his allies, with even Ned (Jacob Batalon) and MJ (Zendaya) no longer remembering him. This drives him towards Frank Castle and triggers an uncontrollable mutation in his Spider-Man abilities, which may help him counter a new, invisible villain. The cast also includes Sadie Sink, marking her MCU debut, and Mark Ruffalo returning as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, with the film due in cinemas in under two weeks.
