Spotify’s Running Mode is now available on Android

Engadget ·

Spotify has expanded its AI-powered Running Mode feature to Android devices, having previously launched it on iOS in late July 2026. The feature generates playlists tailored to a user's run and forms part of Spotify's broader push into fitness content, building on an earlier running experiment the company trialled back in 2018.

Android users can now find Running Mode within Spotify's Fitness Hub, mirroring the iOS version, and can choose from 25 presets spanning various workout types and music genres. The playlists can be further customised by run duration, beat matching to help maintain a target pace, and optional audio cues. The rollout covers the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden, and follows Spotify's January 2026 introduction of AI-driven Prompted Playlists and an April 2026 partnership with Peloton, with the company noting that workout-related playlist requests are among the most common it receives.

Spotify is a music streaming service that lets people listen to songs and playlists on phones and other devices. It has been adding fitness features alongside its usual music and podcast offerings, including a Fitness Hub for workout-related listening.

Running Mode creates a playlist for a run using choices such as workout type, music style and duration. Runners can also opt for music matched to a target pace and spoken audio cues. The feature builds on Spotify’s earlier experiment with running playlists and its more recent AI playlist tools.

Spotify competes with other music and fitness services for people’s listening time, and workout music is a common request from its users. Its fitness features connect music with exercise content, including a partnership with Peloton, the exercise equipment and classes company.
