Martin Quinn says Scotty’s experience in “Off Hour” marks a major step towards becoming the capable “miracle worker” familiar to Star Trek audiences. After initially being an outsider on the Enterprise and struggling to trust others, he is beginning to see the crew as a new family and gain confidence in solving crises collaboratively.

The episode places the Enterprise in a dangerous warp emergency that tests the crew physically and mentally, while also changing Scotty and M’Benga. Babs Olusanmokun says M’Benga urges Chapel to put down roots because he recognises her tendency to run from difficult circumstances and believes the Enterprise’s people offer her stability; Quinn adds that Scotty is learning from Pelia’s calmer faith that a solution will emerge.
