Fashion designer Andrea Marshall, 44, who has dressed celebrities including Cynthia Erivo, Katie Holmes and Julia Roberts, appeared at New York County Criminal Court on Wednesday facing charges of running a sweatshop. She is accused of grand larceny, scheme to defraud, and wage violations, with prosecutors alleging she created a workplace culture marked by fear and manipulation. The brief procedural hearing was adjourned, with Marshall due back in court early next year. After the hearing, her composed demeanour shifted when she realised she would be photographed; she then strutted rapidly down the courthouse corridor in a model-like gait, moving so quickly she missed an elevator and groaned audibly whilst ignoring reporters' questions.

Prosecutors allege that Marshall refused to pay nine employees as they worked shifts lasting up to 17 hours, depriving them of approximately $54,000 in wages between August 2023 and June 2026. According to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office, she subjected workers to bullying, including berating and screaming at them. Marshall, who founded her sustainable fashion company Salon 1884 in 2021 in the Garment District, has pleaded not guilty to all 17 charges. Her attorney has stated he is confident she will be vindicated following a thorough investigation.
