Stunning photos capture October’s Hunter’s Moon around the world

BBC World ·

October’s full Moon, known as the Hunter’s Moon, was photographed across the world over the weekend. Its name comes from Northern Hemisphere traditions, and the Moon’s extended time in the sky was said to give hunters extra light.

Images showed the Moon above locations including San Francisco, Derbyshire, Manhattan, Italy, Dorset, Istanbul, Suffolk and Baghdad. When low in the sky, it can appear orange or red because the atmosphere scatters shorter-wavelength blue light.

In short

  • October’s Hunter’s Moon lit skies around the world.
  • Photos captured it over cities and landmarks across several countries.
  • Low in the sky, the Moon can look orange or red.
