Suitcase Richard Burton sent Elizabeth Taylor’s clothes to sister in up for auction
A suitcase once used to send Elizabeth Taylor’s unwanted clothes to Richard Burton’s sister is going up for auction alongside Burton’s accompanying letter. The 1971 note, written from Switzerland, jokingly suggested that Hilda could give the clothes to a jumble sale or “old colliers”, offering a glimpse of the famous couple’s private life.
The suitcase, letter and a Pratesi shawl embroidered with a message from Taylor are expected to fetch up to £1,300. Burton and Taylor met while filming *Cleopatra*, married twice and starred together in 11 films; they divorced for the second time in 1976. The sale also includes Welsh sporting and historical memorabilia, including rugby items and signed football boots.
