A Sundance Festival Favorite and audience award-winning documentary about Luis Valdez is beginning its theatrical rollout with a sold-out screening at Film Forum in New York this weekend, featuring Valdez himself alongside director David Alvarado and actor Lou Diamond Phillips. The film, which also won the Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize, chronicles Valdez's trajectory as a pioneering stage and film director who created foundational works including Zoot Suit and La Bamba while establishing El Teatro Campesino as an artistic platform for Chicano voices.

The distributor plans a methodical expansion across major markets, with Los Angeles launching next week followed by San Francisco venues in late July, and bookings extending through September in cities including Dallas, Chicago, Houston, and Tucson. Director Alvarado and Valdez will participate in in-person conversations at opening weekends, whilst the film features appearances and narration from notable figures including Edward James Olmos, Linda Ronstadt, Cheech Marin, and civil rights leader Dolores Huerta.
