Systemd development branch permits new leaf components in Rust
Support for Rust has been merged into the development branch for systemd 263, allowing new leaf components to be written in the language. The change expands the project’s implementation options, while its maintainers stress that it is not the start of rewriting existing systemd code in Rust.
Rust code must be built with Meson, avoid Rust’s standard library and use Rust 1.85 or later, along with bindgen 0.71.1 or later and Meson 1.4.0 or later. Existing C code will remain in place, and Rust will not be used in systemd’s core for now because its support for dynamic libraries is not yet suitable.
In short
- systemd 263 development now supports Rust for new components.
- Existing C code will not be rewritten in Rust.
- Rust builds must use Meson and avoid the standard library.
