Talarico wins Texas Senate race, ending decades of Republican dominance
James Talarico has won Texas’s Senate race, ending a long period without a Democrat winning statewide office. The result challenges Texas’s status as a Republican stronghold and follows a divisive Republican primary in which Donald Trump backed Ken Paxton over incumbent John Cornyn.
Paxton struggled to unite his party despite more than half a billion dollars in spending, including at least $212m from Elon Musk. Democrats also won the governor’s race: Gina Hinojosa is set to become Texas’s first Latina governor. Her campaign framed the result as a rejection of hardline immigration policies under outgoing Governor Greg Abbott.
In short
- James Talarico wins Texas’s Senate race for the Democrats.
- The victory ends a statewide Democratic drought dating to 1994.
- Gina Hinojosa also wins, becoming Texas’s first Latina governor.
Steelman: both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
Talarico’s victory can be seen as evidence that Texas voters are open to change after years of Republican control, and that Democrats can build a statewide coalition around different priorities. Alongside Gina Hinojosa’s win, it may reflect voter dissatisfaction with hardline immigration policies and a desire for broader representation in state leadership.
The case against
A Republican case is that one election, shaped by a divisive primary and a particular set of candidates, does not establish a lasting change in Texas’s political alignment. The result may reflect dissatisfaction with the Republican campaign and its internal divisions rather than broad support for Democrats’ policy agenda, so Republicans could still argue for their priorities and seek to regain voters’ trust.
