‘Ted Lasso’ Producer Brendan Hunt on What It Took to Revive the Series, Why Some Characters Didn’t Return and Whether There’s Another Three-Season Plan
Brendan Hunt, co-creator and executive producer of "Ted Lasso" who also plays Coach Beard, has explained how the show's revival came about after its third season had largely been treated as a series finale. He credits the inspiration partly to the England women's football team, the Lionesses, whose UEFA Women's Championship win in 2022 coincided with filming of Season 3 and left a lasting impression on star and co-creator Jason Sudeikis.
Season 3 had ended with a hint of future storylines, with AFC Richmond owner Rebecca and her friend Keeley considering adding a women's team to the club, a deliberate "breadcrumb" left by the writers. Hunt says Sudeikis mulled the idea for a long time, sending occasional exploratory texts before eventually deciding to proceed, partly influenced by his own enthusiasm for women's sport as a New York Liberty WNBA season-ticket holder. Hunt says he deliberately avoided pushing Sudeikis, waiting patiently until the decision to revive the series was confirmed.
