Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has announced that more than 7 million free eggs will be distributed to food banks across the state, with over 1.7 million already delivered and a further 5.3 million expected in the coming weeks. The eggs stem from antitrust settlements reached in June with three major producers—Cal-Maine Foods, Centrum/Versova and Hickman's Egg Ranch—following allegations, brought by the US Department of Justice and a coalition of state attorneys general, that the companies had conspired to inflate egg prices between 2022 and 2025. Paxton framed the move as part of his efforts to ease the cost-of-living burden on struggling Texan families.

Under the settlement terms, the three companies agreed to donate the eggs and pay a combined $3.3 million to participating states. The distribution is being coordinated with Feeding Texas across 17 food banks statewide, with the Houston Food Bank receiving the largest share at over 1.5 million eggs, followed by the North Texas and Tarrant Area food banks with roughly 842,000 eggs each. It remains unclear exactly when individual food banks will begin handing out the eggs or whether eligibility rules will differ by location, and neither Feeding Texas nor Cal-Maine Foods had responded to requests for comment at the time of writing.
