Dire Straits secured their breakthrough in America in 1985 with “Money for Nothing”, the standout single from Brothers in Arms. It became their only US number-one single, helping transform the band from respected British rock musicians into one of America’s biggest acts.

Mark Knopfler was inspired by an appliance-store worker’s cynical comments about television rock stars, while Sting contributed the “I want my MTV” refrain. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks from 21 September, and its pioneering computer-animated video became an MTV staple before winning Video of the Year.
