Pedro Almodóvar turned down the chance to direct *Sister Act* in 1992, despite the opportunity to make his first major Hollywood film. He later said he may have lacked confidence in his English and doubted promises of creative freedom and final cut.

The film, starring Whoopi Goldberg as a singer hiding in a convent, was directed by Emile Ardolino and became a box-office hit, earning more than $230 million. Almodóvar went on to make *Live Flesh*, followed by acclaimed films including *All About My Mother* and *Talk to Her*.
