The Bezos factor – unpicking puzzle of Liverpool’s potential investors
Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group, are considering fresh investment in the club, with reports suggesting Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has been approached about joining a consortium led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia. The consortium is reportedly seeking a 30% stake, and any deal is thought likely to value Liverpool at around £4.5bn, raising questions about FSG's long-term plans for a club that has won major honours since 2010 and remains in a strong financial position.
Bhatia, son-in-law of billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, stepped down as a director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers this week, a move seen as clearing the way for him to lead the investment bid. Bezos, the world's fourth-richest person with an estimated net worth of $256.9bn, has previously come close to buying into American sport, having explored takeovers of NFL side the Washington Commanders and NFL/NFC side the Seattle Seahawks before ultimately not bidding for either. Sources close to Bhatia would not confirm whether Bezos had been contacted, saying only that discussions had been held with several potential investors, while FSG declined to comment. Liverpool reported record revenues of more than £700m in February and topped the Deloitte Football Money League among Premier League clubs.
