Billy Joel has spoken about the deepest betrayal of his career, when he discovered in the late 1980s that his manager, Frank Weber, had misappropriated large sums of his money. Despite enjoying some of the biggest and most successful tours of his career, Joel found himself broke and forced to rebuild his fortune from scratch, a revelation that shook him because he had trusted Weber almost as a family member for years.

Joel has recalled being warned early on against taking Weber on, yet the pair grew close, making the discovery of the missing money feel like a personal betrayal as much as a financial one. He responded by returning to writing, recording and touring, channelling his frustration into the 1989 album Storm Front, which produced arena-ready hits such as "I Go to Extremes" and "We Didn't Start the Fire" as he worked to recover financially.
