Robert Plant recalled being deeply disturbed by a 1960s performance by The Doors’ Jim Morrison, whose increasingly chaotic behaviour he found degrading rather than rebellious. The experience mattered because Plant saw parallels between Morrison’s decline and the destructive path later associated with his Led Zeppelin bandmate John Bonham.

Plant said Morrison insulted the audience, clung dangerously to the stage and appeared increasingly unhealthy and intoxicated. Although Plant respected Morrison’s artistic impact and ability to capture the darker tensions of the 1960s, he believed the singer’s charisma had been eroded by his excesses before his death in Paris.
