Explained simply
The Rings of Power is a fantasy television series based on the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien, whose books include The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It is set thousands of years before those better-known stories, in the Second Age of Middle-earth.
Amazon made the series for Prime Video, its streaming service. Its story follows several peoples and characters as the land faces the return of the dark lord Sauron; the rings of power are central to his plan and to the conflicts that follow.
The series is part of a wider screen franchise that includes films adapted from Tolkien’s books. Its release in physical formats gives viewers another way to own and watch the show, while planned future productions show that Tolkien’s world remains a continuing focus for screen adaptations.
