The Oscar-winning 1991 role Charles Bronson turned down for one stupid reason: “Fuck you, I’m dead”

Far Out ·

Charles Bronson turned down the role of Curly in the 1991 comedy western *City Slickers*, which went to Jack Palance and earned him his only Academy Award. Billy Crystal, the film’s star, said Bronson objected to the character dying midway through the story, despite Crystal explaining why Curly’s death mattered to the plot.

Bronson was known for playing tough, often gun-toting characters, including Paul Kersey in the *Death Wish* films. Crystal recalled that Bronson told him, “I’m dead on page 53” and ended the call with, “Fuck you, I’m dead.” Palance accepted the Oscar at the 1992 ceremony, where he joked with host Crystal and performed one-arm push-ups.

  • Bronson rejected Curly in *City Slickers* because the character dies.
  • Jack Palance took the role and won his only Oscar.
  • Billy Crystal later recalled Bronson’s blunt response.
