The safest way to store your laptop for a long period of time
Storing a laptop unused for weeks or months can put its battery and hardware at risk, so a little preparation helps it remain usable when needed again. The key is to protect the lithium-ion battery from extreme temperatures and over-discharge, while keeping the computer clean, dry and free from pressure.
Back up your data before storage, and, if the battery is removable, consider storing it separately. Otherwise, charge it to about 50 per cent, keep the laptop somewhere temperature-controlled and not humid, and check it every six months to restore the charge to around 50 per cent. Fully power it down, unplug it, clean the screen and keyboard, and store it in a case or its original packaging without placing heavy objects on top.
In short
- Back up your data before putting a laptop away.
- Store it at about 50 per cent charge and check every six months.
- Keep it clean, dry, unplugged and away from heat or pressure.
