The spec is the new code, so brush up on your prose, says Kaseya CTO

The Register ·

Kaseya CTO Pratik Wadher says software developers will need to focus more on domain knowledge, critical thinking and clear writing as AI agents take on more code generation. The shift matters because a well-written specification can guide AI to produce useful software, while generating code without understanding the problem may not.

Kaseya used Anthropic coding agents to help draft and review a specification before generating code for a redesigned storage engine. Wadher says the implementation and testing took six weeks, building on years of domain expertise; the engine can work with storage ranging from ZFS to S3. Claude is becoming Kaseya’s standard coding assistant, though engineers have mixed feelings about the change, and Wadher expects documentation and design specifications to become more important.

  • Its storage engine rewrite took six weeks to implement and test.
  • Wadher says domain expertise remains essential for useful AI-generated code.
