Christine McVie’s Fleetwood Mac song “Hold Me”, released in 1982, was inspired by her turbulent relationship with Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys. The song’s sense of impermanence and bittersweet emotion reflected a relationship that had nearly led to marriage but ended shortly before McVie presented the unfinished track to the band.

McVie and Wilson dated from 1979 to 1982, but his substance-abuse problems placed considerable strain on their relationship. Mick Fleetwood, who introduced them, said McVie often tried to help Wilson recover, describing herself as more of a mother than a partner; Wilson died by drowning in 1983, aged 39.
