The crash happened on a route used by pupils travelling to Ysgol Gwent Is Coed, a Welsh-language school in Newport. Double-decker buses are taller than many road vehicles, so bridges with height limits can pose a risk if a bus is too tall for the clearance.
The railway bridge carries trains between Newport and Hereford. When a collision affects a bridge or the road beneath it, rail services may be delayed or stopped while the area is checked, affecting passengers as well as road users.
