Top Creators’ Secret Weapon? Indian Video Editors

The Hollywood Reporter ·

Social media creators are increasingly hiring remote video editors in India and other countries as demand grows for polished, attention-grabbing content. The trend matters because editors are becoming creative partners rather than simply clip-makers, helping creators retain viewers and produce both short videos and longer podcasts.

YT Jobs says it has more than 250,000 editors registered, up about 50 per cent from last year, with nearly 80 per cent based outside the US. Editors use tools such as Adobe After Effects and DaVinci Resolve, while rates range from about $30 an hour to more than $1,000 per project; highly skilled editors may earn more than some US-based counterparts.

In short

  • Global editors are increasingly central to creator businesses.
  • Indian editors offer talent, not necessarily lower costs.
  • Demand is growing for creative, retention-focused video work.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Outsourcing editing to global talent represents efficient labour market allocation where skilled professionals in developing economies build well-paid careers—some earning more than US counterparts—whilst creators access quality work sustainably. It democratises premium content production and reflects how modern creative work operates internationally.

The case against

Though efficient, outsourcing raises substantive concerns about fair compensation when rates reflect global wage disparities rather than the genuine value editors create for high-revenue projects. It risks eroding domestic editing careers and trading away the collaborative creative relationships that develop through proximity for remote arrangements with inherent communication and partnership limitations.

Explained simply

Online creators rely on video editors to shape raw footage into finished films, podcasts and short clips for social media. Editors may add graphics, sound and pacing to hold viewers’ attention, so their work can influence how a creator’s content is presented.

Many creators hire editors remotely, including from India, where people can work with clients around the world using online tools. YT Jobs, a recruitment platform for YouTube work, says its editor register has grown, with most listed editors based outside the US.

The work can range from basic cutting to creative input on a whole production. Pay varies widely by experience and project, and the growth of remote hiring is changing who can find this work and how creators build their teams.
