Donald and Melania Trump hosted Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, for tea at the White House, concluding Xi’s three-day state visit to Washington. The meeting was presented positively by both leaders, although Trump faced pointed questions about whether he had urged Xi to stop buying Iranian oil, highlighting unresolved tensions between the United States and China.

Xi described the visit, his first to Washington in 11 years, as highly successful and said he saw a brighter future for bilateral relations. Trump said the two sides had made “tremendous strides” and that American farmers would benefit, while the only publicly announced outcome was a two-month extension of a trade truce due to expire on 10 November. China has previously pledged to buy at least $17 billion of US agricultural goods annually through 2028, including 25 million tonnes of American soybeans each year.
