The Trump administration has restarted efforts to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, reviving a dispute over the president’s authority and the central bank’s independence. The move follows a Supreme Court ruling that allowed Cook to remain in her post while challenging the earlier dismissal attempt, but said the administration could try again if it provided proper notice and an opportunity to respond.

In a letter, the White House said Trump was considering Cook’s removal and gave her until 26 August to contest allegations of mortgage fraud, which she denies. Cook was nominated by Joe Biden, and her lawyers have called the allegations baseless; the administration is also appealing a lower-court ruling that favoured her. Her continued position matters because Federal Reserve governors help set US interest-rate policy.
