Trump says Democrats replacing Platner is ‘very hard for them to do’

Fox News · 1 month ago

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One as he returned from a NATO summit in Ankara, President Donald Trump said it would be "very hard" for Democrats to find a replacement for Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, who suspended his campaign on Wednesday. Trump predicted that Platner would likely lose, framing the situation as hinging on "whether or not you believe the woman." The comments matter because they highlight the disruption to a Senate race that Democrats had viewed as important, following the collapse of Platner's candidacy amid serious allegations.

Platner, an oyster farmer, suspended his campaign after numerous Democrats and liberals who had previously backed him withdrew their support and urged him to step aside. The calls followed a Politico report in which his ex-girlfriend, Jenny Racicot, alleged he forced his way into her home and sexually assaulted her in 2021, which itself came after a New York Times story detailing a separate physical abuse allegation from Lyndsey Fifield, a Republican digital strategist. Trump questioned why Fifield's allegations had not generated the same outrage, remarking that "when the Republican woman came out with the same charge, nobody believed her," while Fifield criticised the Times' handling of her account.

  • Trump says Democrats will struggle to replace Platner in Maine.
  • Platner suspended his Senate campaign after rape allegations surfaced.
  • Two women, including a Republican strategist, made accusations against him.
