Ukraine unveils native jet-powered drone interceptor

Ukraine's Ministry of Defence has brought into service its first domestically developed jet-powered drone interceptor, the Alexa Spatium, designed to shoot down Russian attack drones. The v-tail unmanned aircraft targets Shahed-131 kamikaze drones and their Geran-3, Geran-4 and Geran-5 variants, and matters because it gives Ukraine a home-produced, easily deployable defence against Russia's mass drone attacks, reducing reliance on scarcer Western-supplied interceptors.

Measuring 1.5 by 1.7 metres, the aircraft is catapult-launched, small enough to be transported by pickup truck, and can return to base for reuse if it fails to complete a mission. It can carry high-explosive, fragmentation, shaped-charge or thermobaric warheads, uses TV and infrared targeting, and can be guided by pre-set coordinates or directly. Ukraine has withheld details such as top speed, and the weapon is comparable to Britain's Skyhammer interceptor. Such systems cannot stop ballistic missiles, prompting the UK, Ukraine and eight other European nations to launch an Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition in July, alongside a UK decision to let Ukraine build Storm Shadow-based cruise missiles domestically.

Ukraine has begun using its first home-built jet-powered interceptor drone, called the Alexa Spatium, to shoot down Russian attack drones. It is designed to counter the Shahed-131 and its Iranian-derived Geran variants, which Russia has been launching in large numbers against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Developing the weapon domestically means Ukraine can produce it in greater numbers than it could rely on from Western allies.

The drone is small enough to be moved by pickup truck, is launched from a catapult, and can return to base if it does not complete its mission. It carries various types of warhead and can be aimed using onboard cameras and infrared sensors, either pre-programmed or steered in real time. Britain has a comparable system called Skyhammer, reflecting a wider push among Ukraine and its allies to build cheaper, faster ways of stopping mass drone attacks.

These interceptor drones are aimed specifically at slower attack drones and cannot stop ballistic missiles, which travel much faster and follow a different flight path. That gap is why the UK, Ukraine and several other European countries set up a separate coalition earlier this year focused on ballistic missile defence, alongside efforts to let Ukraine build its own long-range cruise missiles.
